What a valuable thing, not marketing, not a seller telling you what to buy…….words of a client who purchased and reviewed his purchase!

At the end of last year I began to look at replacing a 15 year old 5.1 500W Nakamichi AV-10 AVR with some new technology. At the time I was also using a M&K front, center, rear and sub-woofer speaker systems. These speakers work well in the large listening and viewing space, so there was no need for any change in speakers.
Bob Johannsen from Paradigm Integration is an old college friend, so we began talking about available alternatives. A rack of Mac’s has always been appealing due to the quality, reputation and visual appeal. But that sort of systems requires a bit of open space for the equipment.
After numerous conversations about current state of the art audio systems for living room home theater, Bob suggested that I look into the Rotel line of products. Because of space limitations, a set of individual components did not make sense. Since we have no direct line of site to the FM transmission sites, and are blocked, a tuner is unnecessary. An integrated AV Processor is the best present choice.
In November, Rotel announced the release of the RAP1580, a 7.1, 700W AVP and it appeared that this system was appropriate for my needs. Kerry, Bobs associate at Paradigm got her hands on an early release of the user manual in January and sent it on. Thanks Kerry. Despite all my pleas and begging, Bob would not get the RAP1580 out to me earlier this year, spouting something about no wine before its time.

The Rotel RAP-1580

About three weeks ago, I did the purchase contract with Paradigm, and five days later the system arrived at my doorstep.
The RAP1580 is easy to connect with plenty of HDMI, optical, RCA and speaker connections & etc.. The On Screen Display and set up menus are intuitive. Within ninety minutes of opening the box, the Rotel was connected, configured and delivering great sound. The Rotel is a high quality system, powerful, highly configurable, expandable to 11.1 and very easy to operate.
The old Nakamichi does not even begin to measure up the the quality sound delivered by the Rotel. The RAP1580 is ideal for the person who wants very high quality home theater and listening, with plenty of power to deliver any kind of content into a large room, but lacks the space for a rack of hardware.
Many thanks to Bob for letting me cool my jets while looking out for my best interests and to Kerry for keeping my interest stoked.

RAP-1580 is the ideal home theater solution for those who don’t have space for separate components, yet still desire uncompromising performance. It is an ultra-high-performance multichannel-integrated amplifier with surround processing that brings music and movies to life in a startlingly vivid way. Sporting the latest HDMI 2.0a hardware, DTS:X and Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 processing, its amplifier section is built upon a powerful class AB design with 7 x 100 watts per channel, all channels driven into 8 ohms, and anchored by a massive Rotel-made toroidal transformer.

The RAP-1580 utilizes high performance Wolfson 24-bit/192kHz Digital-to-Analog Converters for all channels. These low noise, audiophile quality DACs are supported with premium-grade audio parts in circuits tuned by Rotel’s acoustic engineering team in the U.K.

Inputs include 8 x HDMI video inputs with 2 x HDMI video outputs all supporting 4K video with 3 of these inputs and both outputs enabled with HDCP 2.2. There is a seven-inch TFT display on the front panel to provide easy adjustments to all audio and video parameters without the need to turn on the television or video projection system. This makes it ideal for set-ups when the equipment rack is located separately from the video display. A full suite of custom integration features is on-board.

Other features include a front panel HDMI input with 4K video pass-through, front panel iPod USB input with 2.1A charging and integrated aptX enabled Bluetooth technology for higher fidelity. The RAP-1580 also includes a PC-USB input supporting 24-bit/192kHz audio, a quality MM phono stage input, CD input, XLR balanced input, Tuner input, AUX analog input and multichannel input.

Rotel’s RAP-1580 is simple to operate, powerful, flexible and refined. It is a state-of-the-art single chassis audio/video component that outperforms most separates. In stereo or surround sound, this is a serious audio component.

Here are a couple of pictures of a project we have been working on for most of last year.  It is a new home build where we have done all things low voltage!  Security, surveillance, central vacuum, gate entry and audio/video/automation.  These are pictures from the beautiful theater room. A Sony 85″ flat panel and Bowers & Wilkins in wall theater speakers and sub. Control4 for automation and the gate/door station.

NEW Power Amp coming from Krell!

Just announce, the KRELL Theater-7 multi channel power amp expressly designed for Home Theaters.

Krell Theater-7 $7,500.00

Krell Theater-7 $7,500.00

Krell iBias Class A amplifiers are the first to deliver the rich musicality of Class A amplifiers and the compromised dynamics of classic Krell amplifiers with greater efficiency and low power consumption than conventional Class A amplifiers.

DESIGN

Circuitry Highlights
Krell iBias Class A technology allows our latest amplifiers to run in full Class A mode to full power while minimizing heat generation.

The Theater 7 Amp uses iBias technology to maintain Class A operation up to 100 watts into 8 ohms for the left, right, and center channels and up to 50 watts for the four surround channels. This provides the critical front channels with high bias current to produce that lush, open Class A sound while also minimizing the heat output and power consumption of the whole amplifier.

The amplifier design uses Krell Current Mode technology that is fully differential and discrete in the critical gain stages. This results in a highly linear and extended frequency response, well beyond the range of hearing, for smooth effortless highs and tight high impact bass

Power Supply Highlights

The power supply consists of two 700VA toroidal transformers and 160,000uF of capacitance. This is shared among all the channels so all of that power is available to the channels with the most demand.

In real world conditions the left, right, and center channels require the lion’s share of the power so this gives the Theater 7 a more effective power supply than other amplifiers that have smaller dedicated power supplies for each channel.

Feature Highlights

Network connectivity brings convenience,
monitoring, and reporting to end users from any smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
Amplifier configuration options include display brightness timeout and inactivity timeout. The inactivity timeout conserves energy by placing the amplifier in stand-by when there is no signal for longer than the selected time period. Firmware updates can also be initiated directly from the web server.
Output current, fan status, and operating temperature are monitored in real time for conformance with preset limits. Any faults are reported on the front panel and also on the web server interface. Additionally, the amplifier will send notification of any operational anomalies to the e-mail addresses entered on the web server interface.

Who doesn’t want the powerful impact a sub woofer brings to a Surround Sound system?  But how cool is it to have that big box sitting around?  How about NO big box?

The ISW-3 is an incredibly versatile and compact in-wall and in-ceiling subwoofer, capable of providing high-quality bass output in spaces that may have previously missed out on this vital element, including kitchen cabinets! Its balanced design, featuring 2 x 6in drivers, means that it can be placed in a variety of locations without causing vibrations.

Here are a few pictures of an installation we did in San Carlos, CA featureing the ISW-3 installed in a cabinet.
