We are excited to announce that the Foundation 4K will begin shipping next week. One of the most exciting features of the Foundation 4K is One Wire Support for the Sony 4K media Servers.

With a Krell Foundation 4K processor, only ONE HMDI connection is needed from the Sony FMP-X1/10 to the Foundation 4K processor and then to the TV. A separate HDMI cable connected directly to the TV for video and another one to the processor for audio is not required.

This will be the bench mark for Surround Sound processors to try and measure up to for a sometime to come!

Krell Foundation Unlocks 4K

By John Sciacca • Posted: Sep 15, 2014

One of the big announcements from Sony’s CEDIA keynote address was that the company’s FMP-X10 4K media player would be updated later in the year to work with other companies TVs, meaning Sony is going to partially unlock its proprietary connection. This is great news for Ultra HD content starved viewers, however it will likely still require a separate HDMI cable for audio from the media player to the processor and for video to the TV. Lame. Fortunately, Krell figured out a way around this.As I was finishing a demo at the Paradigm booth, Krell’s president, Bill McKiegan, grabbed me and said, “Hey, I’ve got something you’re gonna want to see.” He then covertly pulled me behind a curtain where a Krell Foundation processor was connected to a Sony 4K media player and TV and told me that the Krell engineers had figured out a way to make the player work via one cable.

McKiegan told me that he just told his engineers, “Hey, guys. We’ve got to just figure this out. Make it work.” The company examined the HDMI signal coming from the FMP players and found the key embedded deep within the code, allowing the Sony 4K media player to connect to the Foundation like any other source. No more TV input flipping or separate cable required.

Starting in October, any Krell Foundation will be able to be upgraded via free firmware to work with the Sony FMP-X1 or FMP-X10 media servers to pull 4K video and audio over a single HDMI cable. This will allow Krell owners to enjoy the highest quality audio and video signals in the easiest manner possible. Or, pretty much what you’d expect from a flagship company like Krell.

ORANGE, CT, USA and MUNICH, GERMANY — May 15 — At the High End Show in Munich, Germany, May 15-18, 2014, Krell will introduce one of the most advanced yet affordable products in its history: the Vanguard integrated amplifier. The Vanguard incorporates a 200-watt-per channel amplifier and a Class A preamplifier, enclosed in a chassis that borrows its design and construction from the new Krell Foundation preamp/processor, Connect stream player, Illusion preamp and iBias amplifiers. Suggested U.S. retail price for the Vanguard is $3,500. An optional, field-installable digital module with USB input, Ethernet audio streaming and apt-X Bluetooth will also be available.

“The name Vanguard connotes leadership and innovation, and that’s exactly what we were going for,” Krell president Bill McKiegan said. “Compared with most other integrated amps on the market, the Vanguard is far ahead in technology, performance and design.”

The Vanguard’s amplifier incorporates a massive power supply with a 750 VA toroidal transformer and 80,000 microfarads of storage capacitance. The tremendous amount of energy on tap allows the Vanguard to deliver 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 400 watts at 4 ohms. This is far more power than most other integrated amplifiers, at any price, can deliver. Two quiet, thermostatically controlled fans permit the use of a surprisingly compact chassis, especially considering how much power the Vanguard produces.

The preamplifier section of the Vanguard borrows its fully balanced, fully discrete Class A circuit concepts from Krell’s top-of-the-line Illusion preamps. Krell’s Current Mode technology is employed to assure unequaled signal bandwidth, easily enough to handle the latest high-resolution PCM and DSD audio sources without impacting high-frequency response and detail.

“We’ve created a lot of landmark products in our 34-year history, but we expect the Vanguard to be one of the most popular and influential audio components we’ve ever designed,” Krell president Bill McKiegan said. “We’ve packed it with many of our most musical-sounding technologies. We’ve kept the chassis small and the design elegant to make it living-room-friendly. Yet it has enough power to achieve incredible, lifelike dynamics with any speaker.”

A machined aluminum volume control accesses a sophisticated front-panel menu system that controls the Vanguard, and also provides features such as input naming, input trim, balance control and muting level–luxuries not offered on integrated amplifiers controlled by traditional switches and knobs. A home theater bypass mode lets the Vanguard serve as the core of a surround-sound system without sacrificing two-channel sound quality in any way. Inputs include three stereo RCA and one stereo balanced XLR. High-quality WBT speaker cable terminals provide a secure, electrically ideal connection.

The Vanguard also offers features that make it perfect for custom installation, such as 3.5mm jacks for IR input and 12-volt trigger input and output, as well as optional rack-mount ears. Additionally, the unit can be controlled with home automation systems through its Ethernet connection.

A key option for the Vanguard is the digital module, which can be added at the factory or by a dealer. The digital module includes USB, HDMI, coax and optical digital inputs; Ethernet music streaming controlled through dedicated iOS and Android apps; and apt-X Bluetooth wireless for convenient streaming from phones, tablets and computers.

“With the digital module installed, all you need to do is add speakers and you have a complete high-end audio system,” McKiegan said. “If your focus is on digital music files and streaming, the Vanguard with the digital module will give you all the convenience of the mass-market streaming audio products, but with sound quality that’s far beyond what those products can achieve. It’s truly an audio product built for the next decade.”

The VANGUARD will begin shipping in July and sell for $3,500.00

NEW Illusions Pre-Amp from Krell

The Illusion preamplifier extends the Krell tradition of separating the power supply from the audio circuitry and supports CAST technology in their flagship preamplifiers

Krell Illusion $15,000.00

Circuitry Highlights

The Illusion preamplifier is a dual monaural circuit design with the left and right channels afforded by their own power supply regulation and individual full chassis sized boards. All signal gain is realized in surface mount topology using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors with nearly 500 times the open loop linearity of other designs. 1.5 MHz open loop circuit bandwidth in a zero feedback, balanced, Krell Current Mode design terminates in Krell CAST. A complete Krell system (source, preamp, and amplifier) system, connected using CAST interconnects reduces the number of voltage gain stages to the minimum, one. The resulting noise floor approaches the theoretical limit of technology. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the preamp, nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 0.003%. The volume control is realized with a balanced resistor ladder – bandwidth and transient response of the preamp circuitry are virtually unaffected by the volume setting.

Power Supply Highlights

The Illusion audio circuits receive power from a Krell Current Mode analog power supply housed in its own dedicated chassis. The power supply avoids the common integrated circuit topology used in many preamplifiers and instead mimics the design topology of Krell Evolution Series amplifiers. The circuitry is completely discrete giving it the ability to respond quickly to current demands and also be unaffected by all but the most severe AC voltage power fluctuations. Oversized for a preamplifier, the power supply features a 290 VA transformer and 41,600µF of capacitance. Locating the power supply in its own chassis presents the ideal configuration for isolating stray electrical and magnetic interference from the critical preamplifier signal path. Capable of delivering current and voltage swing for any musical event, the Illusion power supply is gentle on AC requirements when not in use. A new eco-friendly design reduces standby power draw to 2W.

The NEW Bowers & Wilkins CM-10 in Gloss Black

The CM10 is a fitting flagship for the highly regarded and very popular CM series. It sets a new standard for performance for the price and features a number of significant innovations borrowed from 800 Series, while also introducing an important new tweeter design.
Most obviously, the CM10 is the first model in the CM Series to feature the tweeter-on-top configuration, an iconic design aspect of our top performing models. The outboard tweeter housing is decoupled from the rest of the enclosure. Isolating the tweeter in this way aids imaging and dispersion, creating a more natural, spacious sound.

The tweeter dome contained within that distinctive housing is another first. CM10’s new tweeter is based in part on the research conducted on the carbon-braced tweeter employed in PM1. In the case of the CM10, the edge of the aluminum dome is strengthened using a second aluminum layer that replicates the main dome’s profile with the center part cut out, in essence a ‘double-dome’ design. This approach stiffens the whole structure and prevents the voice coil from going ‘out of round’ at higher frequencies. The result is the best performance yet from a CM Series loudspeaker: the double-dome pushes the first break-up frequency up from the standard dome’s 30kHz to an even more impressive 38kHz. This makes the tweeter purer and more piston-like in the all-important audible band below 20kHz. The result is exceptional clarity and control, even under duress. Importantly, this new tweeter design provides greater sensitivity than the carbon-braced approach (which necessarily adds mass) with very similar acoustic results. Maintaining high sensitivity was important to the overall high output/wide dynamic range goal for this model.

Moving the tweeter to the top of the cabinet has other advantages as well. The overall cabinet height of CM10 is the same as that of CM9, but by adding just a little depth to the enclosure and then relocating both the tweeter and FST midrange drive units creates sufficient extra volume for an additional bass driver unit. So, CM10 has 50 percent more bass driver area than CM9, with three drivers rather than two, yet doesn’t seem significantly larger overall.
It also gains in overall sensitivity, as bass alignment has been altered, allowing CM10 to be tuned lower. This gives it more extension, while the extra bass driver also helps reduce distortion, and enables a higher maximum output level.

Attention has also been paid to the all-important midrange area, and CM10’s Kevlar FST driver is, for the first time in the CM Series, decoupled from the rest of the cabinet. This performance-oriented solution not only reduces audible cabinet coloration, but also makes the listener less aware of the position of the loudspeaker itself.

The FST drive unit is secured in place by a drawbar mechanism, as found in 800 Series Diamond models. Moving the midrange driver closer to the top of the cabinet has similar results to placing the tweeter on top. It improves upward dispersion and increases the sense of airiness.
The cumulative effect of all these improvements is that, when compared to CM9, CM10 plays louder, has a more extended bass, better imaging and lower distortion and coloration. It is a crowning achievement for the CM Series, and pushes the range’s performance to new heights. In a word, it rocks!
CM10 comes in a range of finishes to suit any room. Choose between two real wood veneers, Rosenut or Wenge, or a painted black gloss finish.
