Archives for Speakers category

Spring and summer are the times where outdoor sound and video are thought of the most.  Here is an installation we just finished here at the end of summer. Beautiful yard and a beautiful reason….backyard weddings are the best!!! Especially with a great sounding music system and a  custom play list of the bride and grooms favorite songs!

Bowers & Wilkins engineers at Steyning Research Establishment continue to apply their proven expertise across all loudspeaker categories. Now the Bowers & Wilkins two new game-changing models for the marine / outdoor sound market.

Marine 6 and Marine 8

For some time now, yacht builders have had to accept the status quo in marine application speakers with a compromise for reliability in place of higher performance. This is certainly no longer the case with the introduction of Bowers & Wilkins new Marine 6 and Marine 8. B&W has developed two flush mount loudspeakers that fully comply with the extremely rigid marine IP66 regulations, while living up to the acoustic performance and industrial design standards expected of all Bowers & Wilkins products.

The Marine 6 and Marine 8 speakers feature metal salt-resistant grilles and all screws are marine-grade stainless steel. The driver chassis’ uses a non-corroding rigid polymer and the tweeter dome has a rear support to prevent permanent deformation when using pressured fresh water to wash off salt accumulations. The speaker systems are fully encased to protect electric components and all surfaces from corrosion. As denoted by their model numbers, the speakers’ bass/midrange driver dimensions are 6″ and 8″ with both featuring 1″ soft dome tweeters.

The result of Bowers & Wilkins intensive investigation and engineering execution is that the designs are extremely rugged and perform with a higher level of acoustic performance than is typically found in marine application speakers. B&W’s Marine 6 and Marine 8 models are ideal for use on fresh and salt water vessels, but equally applicable for outdoor use in residential applications, even those situated in challenging seaside locations.

The new Bowers & Wilkins 600 Series — officially each model is an S2 as it is the second generation of the current 68X model — extends a long lineage of offering truly exemplary audio quality at remarkably affordable price points. Although these are our entry level products, there is nothing “budget” about them. Pride of ownership is the right of every Bowers & Wilkins customer. Brand loyalty begins here. With a new generation of music enthusiasts entering the market through the personal audio channel, we think it’s vital to convey the essence of what we do when they move from music in their heads to music in their rooms.

Bowers & Wilkins existing 600 Series of hi-fi and home theater speakers has won a host of awards for its mix of value and performance. Now, through the careful application of both established and all-new technologies, every element of its design has been significantly improved in the form of six new models. The resulting range — versatile, discreetly stylish and able to compete against far more expensive rivals — sets an all-new standard for affordable loudspeakers.

The new 600 Series utilizes proven Bowers & Wilkins engineering solutions from other ranges — Double Dome Tweeters derived from the CM10 speaker extend the first breakup frequency to 38kHz, Anti-Resonance Plugs for mid/bass drive units first seen in the PM-1 lower bass distortion and improve dynamics and, of course, Bowers & Wilkins’ iconic Kevlar® cones provide smooth, articulate midrange. Added to these proven technologies are new advances developed specifically for the new 600 Series, including new Dual Layer aluminum bass drivers and new tweeter decoupling technology.

The Decoupled Double Dome tweeter on its own is a major technological advance. It comprises two separate aluminum domes, the second with its center portion cut out and glued to the rear face of the first dome to create a remarkable blend of lightness and rigidity. The entire tweeter assembly is then decoupled, being physically separated from the cabinet by a cushioning gel ring in much the same way as our outboard tweeters. Harmful resonances are neither transferred from the baffle to the tweeter or the tweeter to the baffle. The resulting Decoupled Double Dome tweeter has stunning clarity and tonal purity plus outstanding imaging and dispersion. The new models sound bigger with less dynamic compression — credit much of that to the new tweeter design. We have also fitted the new design with an optimized steel mesh grille to prevent accidental or malicious damage in a decorative brushed aluminum plate with a diamond cut logo. The result is a steep change in capability for affordable loudspeaker design, one that propels the new 600 Series firmly to the top of its class.

The new 600 Series is ideal not just for stereo hi-fi applications — making the most of everything from vinyl to FLAC — but also home theater. The range includes two all-new center channel speakers.

The Line Up

The 683 S2 is the largest speaker in the new 600 Series — a floorstanding designed to deliver outstanding power, accuracy and musicality. The 683 features the new Decoupled Double Dome tweeter, an FST(tm) midrange driver and new Dual Layer aluminum bass drivers. This new Dual Layer design sees an aluminum bass cone reinforced around its periphery with a second layer of aluminum, for a more effectively damped cone and higher break-up frequency. The result is even richer, distortion-free bass. With exceptional performance across the frequency range, the new 683 fuses serious stereo and home cinema sound with amazing value for a speaker of this caliber. The 683 S2 is priced $1650 per pair.

The new 684 S2 floorstanding is now slimmer than ever, yet still offers an amazing combination of serious power, clarity and unbeatable value. That’s because of improved Kevlar bass/midrange drive units and the Decoupled Double Dome tweeter. 5″ mid/bass drivers replace the 6.5″ drivers of the current 684, affording a décor-friendly appearance, yet Bowers & Wilkins engineers have improved audio performance by using the Anti-Resonance Plugs in the drivers to deliver smoother response and lower distortion when driven hard. The 684 S2 is also a 2-way design compared to the 2.5 way of the previous model. The smaller drivers have broader off axis response at higher frequencies, allowing the use of a simpler crossover. The result is room-filling sound without a room-filling speaker cabinet. The 684 S2 is priced $1150 per pair.

The versatile new 685 S2 is at home on a stand or bookshelf. Perfectly sized for most rooms, it combines new Decoupled Double Dome tweeters, Kevlar cones and Anti-Resonance Plugs with all the value for which the 600 Series is renowned. The Decoupled Double Dome tweeter found throughout the new 600 Series builds on technology developed for the award-winning CM10. The new 685 is destined to follow in the footsteps of its highly acclaimed predecessors, the 601 and the outgoing 685, and will be recognized as THE definitive affordable compact loudspeaker — just as its predecessors were in their time. The 685 S2 is priced $700 per pair.

With the new 686 S2, small really is beautiful. At just 6.3″ wide x 12.4″ high x 9″ deep, the 686 is the most compact speaker in the new 600 Series, but don’t underestimate its power and precision. That’s thanks to its new Decoupled Double Dome tweeter and improved Kevlar driver with Anti-Resonance Plug. Its main 5-inch driver features a 25mm voice coil for higher sensitivity, and it now has a front rather than rear-firing Flowport(tm), making it ideal for placement near a wall or in a bookshelf. The 686 features a built-in bracket for easy wall mounting but it sounds just as good on a bookshelf — or just about anywhere else. The 686 S2 is priced $550 per pair.

Home theater versatility

The new 600 Series isn’t just great for hi-fi; with two center speakers and in combination with our three 600 Series subwoofers, its ideal for home cinema.

HTM61 S2 has probably seen greater change than any other in the range. The outgoing model, in an effort to minimize baffle area while still offering a full 3-way system, had only a single bass driver and an asymmetrical horizontal dispersion pattern around the upper crossover frequency. The new model takes a similar design philosophy to the CM Center 2 and has grown considerably as a result. Placing the tweeter directly above the 4″ FST midrange driver guarantees a symmetrical dispersion and the extra bass driver matches the power output of the 683 S2, with which this center speaker should be used in a home theater installation. The HTM61 is priced $750 each.

HTM62 S2, the smaller of the two center speakers, carries over the twin 5″ bass/midrange with central tweeter concept of the outgoing model. The cabinet height has been reduced in the same way that the 686 S2 width has decreased, but in order to keep the same internal volume without increasing depth, the cabinet width has increased a little. However, both center speakers retain rear-facing ports in order to minimize cabinet width. The speaker may be considered as a 684 S2 on its side, with the tweeter moved to a position between the bass/midrange drivers to guarantee a symmetrical horizontal dispersion. Typically, it would be included into any 600 Series home theatre system that did not feature the 683 S2 at front left and right. The HTM62 S2 is priced $450 each.

Bowers & Wilkins new 600 Series combines unbeatable value and best-ever performance. Importantly, and in contrast to many segments in our industry, we are taking price points modestly up, easily supported by the many refinements…and to the betterment of your bottom line! Vastly improving on every facet of its predecessors, the new 600 Series comfortably surpasses the outgoing range’s already excellent reputation for outstanding value and exemplary audio performance.

Jim Milton of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity

“I liked the Soundtrack System. It falls in between what I would call the mid-price range for what soundbars are currently selling for. It provides better bass than most entry level systems offer while delivering ample volume and clarity for movies and TV viewing…. It has multiple mounting and placement options coupled with a sleek, well finished design that will look good in most room decors.”

“The Paradigm Soundtrack delivers in those two areas that I find to be most important: clear dialog reproduction and broad dynamic range. If you are looking for simplicity and flexibility in a good sounding soundbar system, the Soundtrack may well be what you are looking for. “Good sound” always sounds good to me.”

The Paradigm Soundtrack System $799.99

Here’s what Jerry Del Colliano of had to say;

I’ve loved the time that I spent with my Paradigm Soundtrack System………The Paradigm Soundtrack System can hang …….. performance-wise, with sound-bar / sub combos costing well more than twice the price. And isn’t that the Paradigm model – to deliver twice the performance for half the price ……… I can say that the Paradigm Soundtrack System is both a steal and a top performer.
